The IBEW Local 24 electrical apprenticeship is a five-year program that offers an in-depth introduction to the trade, taking students from craftsmanship through apprenticeship. The program is backed by the Maryland Chapter of the National Electrical Contractors Association (NECA).
Participants receive on-site job training and classroom coursework to help them build a successful career. Apprentices have the opportunity to work on-site with a NECA contractor, giving them the opportunity to learn first-hand. On-site work is supplemented by coursework developed using the Electrical Training Alliance curriculum.

Career Tracks
- Inside Wireman Program
This apprenticeship program focuses on teaching individuals how to install and maintain electrical wiring systems within residential, commercial, and industrial buildings. This includes tasks such as running conduit, installing fixtures, and connecting power distribution panels. It includes a combination of on-the-job training under a journeyperson electrician and classroom instruction covering electrical theory, codes, and safety procedures. - VDV (Voice, Data and Video) Program
The VDV program is an electrical apprenticeship program that teaches how to install and maintain low-voltage cabling systems that transmit signals for voice, data, and video. VDV systems are commonly used in commercial and industrial settings, but are also found in homes. They are used for broadband, computer networks, multimedia devices, and telecommunications services.
Qualifications
- 18 years of age or older.
- Possess a valid drivers license.
- High school diploma or GED.
- Official high school transcripts.
- Receive a 4 or higher on the NJATC Electrical Trades Aptitude Test developed and validated by the American Institutes of Research.
- Discharged military personnel must provide their DD-214 forms.

Inside Wireman Program
- Starting rate: $20.70/hr.
- On-the-job training: Five years (8,000 hrs).
- Classroom instruction: Two years of day school (one class every other week) followed by three years of night school (two
classes per week). - Current journeyman
rate: $46.00/hr.
VDV Program
- Starting Rate: $17.38/hr.
- 160 hours of night-time classroom instruction with classes two nights per week.
- Installer-Technician Rate: $31.60/hr.
