Sheet Metal Workers

Sheet metal workers perform a wide array of jobs related to the design, fabrication, installation, testing and maintenance of sheet metal products and accessories. This includes:

  • Reading plans and specifications to bid, design fabricate, and install sheet metal products.
  • Fitting, welding, and soldering pieces for heating and air conditioning ducts, roofing, air systems, spray booths, paint drying ovens, ducts and stacks, blow pipe systems, and tanks.
  • Working on air pollution control systems and solar energy systems.
  • Testing, adjusting & balancing air and hydronic systems.
  • AutoCAD and Revit blueprint design.
  • And more!

Local 100 of the International Association of Sheet Metal, Air, Rail and Transportation Workers (SMART) offers a fivw-year apprenticeship program that combines one day of classroom instruction every two weeks with on-the-job training. New classes start every three (3) months.

Requirements
  • Must be 18 years of age.
  • Must be physically fit to perform the work of the sheet metal trade.
  • Drug testing mandatory for acceptance into apprenticeship program
  • High school diploma or GED is not required at this time.
  • Entrance exam: Construction related math.
  • Should have reliable transportation.
Application Process

Application must be on file at least one day before testing. Testing is generally held twice every three months. Testing is open from 9:00 a.m. to 3:00 p.m.
