IUPAT District Council 51
The Finishing Trades Institute of Maryland, Virginia, Washington, D.C. and Vicinities (FTI) is the educational department for the International Union of Painters and Allied Trades (IUPAT) District Council 51. The institute offers opportunities in apprenticeship and an intense work study program in which, upon graduation, students obtain journeyperson status in the trade of commercial painter, drywall finisher, architectural glass and metal technician (glazier) or coating applicator specialist.
The FTI also provides continued education and training to keep its journeypersons the safest, most qualified and productive workers in the industry. The institute offers skill enhancement and health and safety training to allow all members the opportunity to further develop their skills and increase their knowledge, exposing them to new technologies, advancements in the industries and preparing them for the future.

Career Tracks
Commercial painter
Commercial painters prepare and paint walls, ceilings, doors and door frames, using brushes, rollers and spray equipment. They also apply wall coverings such as wallpaper, vinyl, fabric coverings and murals. Apprentices in this craft, often utilize an artistic touch as a restore and beautify our cities in both new construction and restoration projects.
Drywall finisher
Drywall finishers, or tapers as they are sometimes referred to, prepare unfinished interior drywall panels for painting. As a drywall finisher, you could find yourself working on large commercial projects, historic restoration projects or new residential developments.
Glazier/architechtural metal
Architectural glass and metal technicians, (glaziers) fabricate and install various glass and glazing systems, such as curtain walls, store fronts, skylights, mirrors, glass canopies, glass doors, aluminum doors, door hardware and decorative metal systems in commercial construction projects, commercial renovations and historic renovations.
Coating applicator specialist
Coating applicator specialists apply protective coatings and linings to steel, concrete and iron on complex structures, including bridges, water tanks, dams, chemical plants, nuclear power plants, offshore platforms and even battleships.
Qualifications
- Photo ID proof of age – must be at least 17 years old.
- Copy of Social Security card requested, but not required
- Four completed essay questions from the application.
- Must be a legal citizen of the United StatesS or legal alien authorized to work in the country. Documentation must be shown at time of application
- Must have adequate transportation to intend on the job learning and related instruction classes.
Application Process
Apprenticeship applications are accepted online only. Walk-in applications are not accepted. Apply via the www.ftimdvadc.edu website.
After the application and supporting documents are submitted, applications will be checked for minimum qualifications. The pre-applicant will then be notified of a date and time to return for the applicant orientation to complete the application process
