Operating Engineers

IUOE Locals 37, 77 and 99

Members of the International Union of Operating Engineers (IUOE) perform a wide variety of challenging operating tasks. These include operating bulldozers, motor graders, backhoes, paving machinery and cranes that help to form highways, site infrastructure and skylines. They work mines, dig wells, survey sites, pave and grind roads, drill and hoist steel and slabs. They also do the final grading and maintain and repair machinery.

In order to master operating techniques for construction equipment, operators must account for differences in size and complexity of equipment, weather conditions, and variations in soil and machine operating characteristics. They must also be able to adapt mentally to complete a work assignment correctly and safely within a prescribed time period.

Apprentices receive free training through the “earn while you learn” program. The apprenticeship program is completed in three years and includes on-the-job, field, and classroom training.

Earn While You Learn!
Career Tracks

Operating engineers can be found on any project using heavy construction equipment. They take pride in the fact that on virtually all construction projects they are the first workers on the job, and the last off. Individuals can change tracks or experience construction from different viewpoints while they determine what best fits their personality and lifestyle.
